Málaga Airport saw 8.8 million passengers in 2021

Despite the continued negative effects of Covid-19 during 2021 passenger numbers at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport increased to 8.8 million, according to the official figures of Aena the airport operator.

Although way down (55%) on the 2019 pre-pandemic levels, the numbers are up by 72 per cent on 2020, which was another year of strict travel restrictions in Europe. The figures also mean that Málaga airport was the fourth busiest in Spain after Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca.

The most recent restrictions imposed for the Omicron variant of C-19 resulted in 816,552 passengers passing through Málaga aiport in December 2021, 28 per cent down on pre-pandemic December 2019.

The official traveller statistics will come as a welcome boost to tourism-related businesses across the Costa del Sol and beyond and give great hope for continued growth and return to normality through 2022.
